Beyond your mat, asteya is more than not physically stealing. Ahimsa (the first yama in yogic foundational principles) is often understood as non-harming or non-violence. But itโs not solely about how we treat othersโitโs also about how we treat ourselves. In a world that constantly pushes us to go faster, do more and work on the externals, practicing ahimsa means embracing compassion, gentleness and mindfulness toward our own bodies and spirits.
Itโs about listening to our healing intuition and choosing to follow it. It means giving ourselves permission to rest and letting go of the need to always be productive. It can also meaning giving yourself the extra push of love and courage in trying something new and beneficial. True self-care aligns with ahimsa because it allows us to nurture ourselves in ways that promote balance and well-being. By carving out time for stillness, reflection and choice, we can truly honor our needs without judgment or guilt.
